This third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic effectively treats diverse infections including respiratory, urinary tract, and bone/joint infections. The medication works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. With broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, it’s particularly effective against beta-lactamase producing organisms. Administered via IM/IV routes, Aciphin requires proper storage below 30°C to maintain stability.

Aciphin is generally well tolerated. A few side effects such as gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, stomatitis and glossitis; cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema and erythema multiforme; hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, anemia and neutropenia; hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia; CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances, headache, hyperactivity, convulsion, hypertonia and dizziness were reported. Local phlebitis occurs rarely following intravenous administration but can be minimized by slow injections over 2-4 minutes.

Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts – caution during lactation. Consider suspending breastfeeding during treatment.

Keep epinephrine ready for anaphylaxis management. Monitor CBC and hepatic function during prolonged therapy. Discontinue if signs of biliary obstruction occur. Maintain adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria.

Safe for children >1 month. Neonates contraindicated. Dose adjustment may be needed in elderly and hepatic/renal impairment patients. Hemodialysis doesn’t require supplemental dosing.

There is no specific antidote. Treatment of overdosage should be symptomatic.
