Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) – Complete History & Biography

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) is one of Bangladesh’s most historic, prestigious, and largest medical institutions. Located in Shahbagh, Dhaka, the hospital functions as both a top-tier healthcare facility and the academic hub for Dhaka Medical College. Established in 1946, DMCH has grown into a national center of excellence in medical education, patient care, and clinical research. Today, it serves thousands of patients daily and stands as a backbone of Bangladesh’s healthcare ecosystem.

Early Origins (Before 1946)

The history of Dhaka Medical College Hospital began long before the institution was formally established. The main building—built around 1904—was originally used as the secretariat for the then-province of East Bengal and Assam. With the establishment of the University of Dhaka in 1921, parts of this complex were used as the university medical center and student residences.

During World War II, the facility was occupied by American armed forces and used as a wartime hospital. After the war, the buildings were vacated, creating the opportunity to convert the premises into a full-fledged medical college and hospital.

Establishment of Dhaka Medical College (1946)

Dhaka Medical College officially started its academic journey on 10 July 1946, a date still celebrated every year as DMC Day.

Founding Highlights

  • Early batches consisted of students transferred from Calcutta Medical College.

  • The first principal was Major William John Virgin, who played a key role in establishing administrative and academic structures.

  • At its inception, DMCH had only a few departments—Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, and ENT.

  • Due to limited faculty initially, subjects like Anatomy and Physiology were temporarily taught at Mitford Medical School until dedicated professors joined.

  • Classes were held in the hospital wards before dedicated academic buildings were constructed.

Growth & Expansion (1950s–2000s)

Dhaka Medical College Hospital expanded rapidly as demand for modern healthcare increased.

Major Developments

  • 1955: Construction of new academic blocks, including lecture galleries and dissection halls.

  • 1952–1975: Establishment of multiple student hostels and dormitories for both male and female students, along with dedicated accommodations for intern doctors.

  • Infrastructure gradually expanded to include laboratories, modern operating theaters, specialized diagnostic units, and extended inpatient wards.

Over the decades, new clinical departments, specialized units, and postgraduate programs were added, positioning DMCH at the forefront of medical training and advanced treatment in Bangladesh.

Modernization & Hospital Expansion

Dhaka Medical College Hospital today is one of the largest tertiary-care hospitals in the country.

Current Profile

  • Capacity: Approximately 2,600 beds

  • Daily Patient Load:

    • Over 5,000 outpatient visits

    • Around 1,300 emergency patients

    • More than 500 inpatient admissions

  • Departments: Nearly every major clinical specialty, including Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Oncology, Neurology, Psychiatry, and more.

  • Burn & Plastic Surgery Unit: The hospital houses a 300-bed burn and plastic surgery unit, one of the largest such facilities in Bangladesh.

  • Surgical Operations: Tens of thousands of major and minor surgeries are performed annually.

A major milestone was the inauguration of DMCH-2, a modern hospital extension, which significantly expanded bed capacity and improved service delivery.

Academic Excellence

Undergraduate (MBBS) Program

DMCH offers a 5-year MBBS program under the University of Dhaka. The curriculum covers foundational medical sciences followed by clinical training across major disciplines. Students undergo four professional examinations, including written, viva, practical, and clinical assessments. A minimum of 60% is required to pass.

Postgraduate Programs

The college offers MD, MS, MPhil, Diploma, and Fellowship-level courses across more than 50 specialties. Programs are conducted in affiliation with the University of Dhaka, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, and the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons.
DMCH is recognized as one of the most competitive and respected postgraduate training centers in the country.

Student Life & Campus Culture

Dhaka Medical College is not only known for academic rigor but also for producing active, socially conscious medical professionals.

  • Well-established hostels for male, female, and intern doctors

  • Numerous student organizations, cultural clubs, and social service groups

  • Active participation in national and public health initiatives

  • A strong alumni network that includes healthcare leaders, educators, researchers, and policymakers

Role in National History

Dhaka Medical College Hospital played a historic role in several major movements in Bangladesh:

Language Movement (1948–1952)

Students of DMC took part actively in the Bengali Language Movement, participating in demonstrations and supporting the struggle for linguistic identity.

Liberation War (1971)

During the Bangladesh Liberation War, DMCH doctors, students, and staff contributed by treating injured civilians and freedom fighters. The institution stands as a symbol of resilience and humanitarian service during the nation’s most critical period.

Leadership & Administrators

DMCH has been led by many respected principals and directors over the decades, contributing to academic quality and hospital development. Leadership transitions have shaped policy decisions, infrastructure development, and the overall evolution of the institution.

Notable Alumni

Dhaka Medical College has produced some of Bangladesh’s most prominent doctors, surgeons, professors, researchers, and public health leaders. Many alumni hold distinguished positions nationally and internationally and have contributed immensely to the advancement of the healthcare sector.

Significance & Legacy

Dhaka Medical College Hospital remains:

  • One of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in Bangladesh

  • A central pillar in medical education, research, and specialized healthcare

  • A facility that treats patients from every corner of the country

  • A historical landmark tied deeply to national identity, medical progress, and public service

DMCH continues to expand, modernize, and aspire toward becoming one of South Asia’s leading medical institutions. Its journey from a modest post-war establishment to a massive healthcare and educational powerhouse reflects the evolution of Bangladesh’s healthcare system itself.
