Description

Mopride is a prescription medication containing Prucalopride Succinate 1 mg, manufactured by Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. This tablet is specifically designed for adults with chronic constipation unresponsive to laxatives. Priced at ৳14.00 per unit, it comes in strips of 15 tablets (৳210.00) or packs of 30 tablets (৳420.00).

As a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist, Mopride enhances gastrointestinal motility by stimulating acetylcholine release in the colon. Unlike older laxatives, it minimizes cardiovascular risks by avoiding hERG channel interactions. Clinical studies show rapid relief within 3-4 hours of administration, making it effective for long-term management.

Dosage guidelines recommend 2 mg once daily before/after meals for adults. Elderly patients start with 1 mg, increasing to 2 mg if needed. It’s contraindicated for children under 18. Notable side effects include mild-to-moderate headaches, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, typically resolving within days.

Key precautions include avoiding use during pregnancy/lactation and monitoring drug interactions with ketoconazole or cyclosporine. Store tablets below 30°C in their original bottle with desiccant. For alternatives or detailed pharmacology, explore Prucalopride Succinate generics.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 2 mg once daily before/after meals. Elderly: Start with 1 mg, may increase to 2 mg. Renal impairment (GFR <30): 1 mg daily. Contraindicated below 18 years. Treatment duration varies by symptom response.

Side Effects

The most frequently reported adverse reactions associated with Mopride therapy are headache (17.8%) and gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain), nausea and diarrhoea. The adverse reactions occur predominantly at the start of therapy and usually disappear within a few days with continued treatment. Other adverse reactions have been reported occasionally. The majority of adverse events were mild to moderate in intensity.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Contraindicated in pregnancy. Avoid during lactation. Use contraception. Animal studies show no risk, but human data insufficient.

Precautions & Warnings

Caution in lactose intolerance. Dose adjustment needed for liver/kidney disease. May reduce oral contraceptive efficacy; use backup method.

Use in Special Populations

Renal impairment: 1 mg/day if GFR <30. Hepatic cirrhosis (Child-Pugh C): Start with 1 mg. Not recommended for pediatrics.

Overdose Effects

An overdose may result in symptoms resulting from an exaggeration of prucalopride’s known pharmacodynamic effects and include headache, nausea and diarrhoea. Specific treatment is not available for Mopride overdose. Should an overdose occur, the patient should be treated symptomatically and supportive measures instituted, as required. Extensive fluid loss by diarrhoea or vomiting may require correction of electrolyte disturbances.
