The drug accelerates gastric emptying by blocking dopamine receptors in the gut. Unlike similar drugs, Motigut minimally crosses the blood-brain barrier, reducing neurological side effects.

Dosage instructions vary: adults take 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours, while children require 0.2-0.8 mg/kg body weight. Administer 15-30 minutes before meals. Maximum treatment duration for acute nausea is 12 weeks. Rectal suppositories (30-60 mg) are available for adults with swallowing difficulties.

In rare case this hyperprolactinaemia may give rise to neuroendocrinological phenomena such as galactorrhoea and gynaecomastia. When the blood-brain barrier is immature (as in infants) or impaired, the possible occurrence of neurological side-effects cannot be totally excluded. Rare allergic reactions, such as rash and urticaria, have also been reported.

Anticholinergic, antiparkinson drugs or antihistamines with anticholinergic properties may be helpful in controlling the extrapyramidal reactions.
