Moxaclav IV Injection (1 gm + 200 mg)/20 ml

Moxaclav is a potent antibiotic combination containing Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. This injection formulation (1g+200mg)/20ml combats resistant bacterial infections effectively. The drug works synergistically: Amoxicillin destroys bacterial cell walls, while Clavulanic Acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes. This dual action overcomes antibiotic resistance in conditions like sinusitis, pneumonia, and pyelonephritis. Available as IV injection, it requires refrigeration after reconstitution and must be used within 20 minutes.

• Upper respiratory infections (tonsillitis, otitis media)

Dosage varies by age and severity. Adults typically receive 1.2g every 8 hours intravenously. Pediatric doses calculate 30mg/kg amoxicillin component. Store below 25°C, avoiding light/moisture. Reconstituted solutions remain stable for 7 days refrigerated.

Side effects, as with Amoxicillin, are uncommon and mainly of a mild and transitory nature. Diarrhoea, pseudomembranous colitis, indigestion, nausea, vomiting and candidiasis have been reported, if gastrointestinal side effects occur with oral therapy, that may be reduced by taking Co-amoxiclav at the start of meals. Hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice have been reported rarely but are usually reversible. Urticarial and erythematous rashes sometimes occur. Rarely erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and exfoliative dermatitis have been reported. In common with other beta-lactam antibiotics, angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported.

Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk – monitor infant for adverse effects.

Monitor renal function in elderly patients. Maintain adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria. Regular LFT recommended during prolonged therapy.

Pediatric dosing requires weight-based calculation. Double dosing interval in severe renal impairment. Maximum 1.2g/day in hepatic cirrhosis.

Problems of overdose with Co-amoxiclav are unlikely to occur, if encountered gastrointestinal symptoms and disturbance of the fluid and electrolyte balances may be evident. Co-amoxiclav may be removed from the circulation by haemodialysis.
