Bangladesh Medical University (Former PG Hospital / BSMMU)

Bangladesh Medical University — previously known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and widely recognized as PG Hospital — is the country’s leading postgraduate medical university located in Shahbagh, Dhaka. It is the highest authority for advanced medical education, super-specialized hospital care, and clinical research in Bangladesh. As the only dedicated postgraduate medical university in the nation, it plays a critical role in producing expert physicians, surgeons, and medical researchers.

Historical Evolution

1. Origins as IPGMR (1965)

The institution began in December 1965 as the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR). Its core mission was to advance medical research and create a structured environment for specialist medical training. IPGMR operated from the old Hotel Shahbagh premises and quickly became the epicenter of postgraduate medical education in Bangladesh.

2. Transformation into BSMMU (1998)

In 1998, the government upgraded IPGMR into a full-fledged medical university. This transformation marked a new era of organized postgraduate education, research, and hospital services. The new university was renamed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in honor of the Father of the Nation.

3. Renaming to Bangladesh Medical University (2025)

In 2025, the institution underwent a major rebranding. Its name officially changed from BSMMU to Bangladesh Medical University. The objective was to establish a unified national identity for postgraduate medical education and strengthen the institution’s position as the central academic authority for MD, MS, MPhil, PhD, and residency programs.

Academic Excellence

1. Exclusive Focus on Postgraduate Education

Bangladesh Medical University is the only medical university in the country offering exclusively postgraduate degrees — MD, MS, MPhil, Diploma, and PhD programs. It maintains high academic standards through structured curricula, rigorous examinations, and clinical rotations led by senior specialists.

2. Advanced Specializations

The university covers a full spectrum of disciplines:

  • Internal Medicine

  • Surgery

  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

  • Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology

  • Oncology, Hematology

  • Orthopedics & Neurosurgery

  • ENT, Eye, Dermatology

  • Public Health, Basic Medical Sciences

This wide coverage makes it the national hub for specialist medical training.

3. Faculty & Teaching Network

The university collaborates with numerous specialty institutes and super-specialty hospitals across Bangladesh. This ecosystem strengthens clinical exposure, research collaboration, and interdisciplinary training.

Clinical Care & Hospital Services

1. Tertiary-Level Referral Hospital

Bangladesh Medical University operates a major tertiary-care hospital that treats patients from across the country. It provides advanced treatment for critical illnesses, rare conditions, and complex surgeries.

2. Super-Specialized Hospital Expansion

A 750-bed super-specialized unit was added in recent years, significantly boosting its capacity in:

  • Critical care

  • Organ-specific medicine

  • Advanced surgical procedures

  • Oncology and radiotherapy

  • Neuromedicine

  • Minimally invasive and robotic surgeries (growing areas)

This positions the university as the most advanced public-sector hospital in Bangladesh.

3. Key Facilities

  • ICU and NICU

  • Modern operating theaters

  • Advanced imaging & diagnostics

  • Specialized outpatient clinics

  • High-end laboratory services

Research, Innovation & Academic Impact

1. Research Leadership

Bangladesh Medical University hosts one of the strongest clinical research infrastructures in Bangladesh. It organizes research conferences, offers research grants, and runs structured research training for physicians.

2. Academic Journals

The university publishes a peer-reviewed medical journal, contributing to national and international scientific knowledge.

3. International Collaboration

The institution partners with global universities and medical research bodies to exchange knowledge, improve standards, and modernize medical education.

Affiliated Institutions & Network

Bangladesh Medical University maintains functional or academic ties with many national specialty hospitals and institutes, including:

  • National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases

  • National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital

  • BIRDEM General Hospital

  • National Institute of Neuro-Sciences & Hospital

  • National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation

This extensive network ensures broad training opportunities and research collaboration across the country.

Governance & Leadership

  • The President of Bangladesh serves as the Chancellor of the university.

  • The Vice-Chancellor leads the administration, academic operations, and strategic development.

  • Various committees, syndicates, and academic councils regulate academic quality and hospital governance.

Social Role & Legacy

For decades, PG Hospital / BSMMU / Bangladesh Medical University has served as a “beacon of hope” for patients seeking specialized treatment at an affordable cost. It remains the primary institution for advanced training of future specialists and continues to play a vital role in improving Bangladesh’s healthcare standards.

Its evolution from IPGMR to BSMMU and finally to Bangladesh Medical University reflects its expanding mission — from a research institute to a national pillar for postgraduate medical excellence.
