Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) – Complete History & Biography

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) is one of Bangladesh’s most historic, prestigious, and largest medical institutions. Located in Shahbagh, Dhaka, the hospital functions as both a top-tier healthcare facility and the academic hub for Dhaka Medical College. Established in 1946, DMCH has grown into a national center of excellence in medical education, patient care, and clinical research. Today, it serves thousands of patients daily and stands as a backbone of Bangladesh’s healthcare ecosystem.

Early Origins (Before 1946)

The history of Dhaka Medical College Hospital began long before the institution was formally established. The main building—built around 1904—was originally used as the secretariat for the then-province of East Bengal and Assam. With the establishment of the University of Dhaka in 1921, parts of this complex were used as the university medical center and student residences.

During World War II, the facility was occupied by American armed forces and used as a wartime hospital. After the war, the buildings were vacated, creating the opportunity to convert the premises into a full-fledged medical college and hospital.

Establishment of Dhaka Medical College (1946)

Dhaka Medical College officially started its academic journey on 10 July 1946, a date still celebrated every year as DMC Day.

Founding Highlights

  • Early batches consisted of students transferred from Calcutta Medical College.

  • The first principal was Major William John Virgin, who played a key role in establishing administrative and academic structures.

  • At its inception, DMCH had only a few departments—Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, and ENT.

  • Due to limited faculty initially, subjects like Anatomy and Physiology were temporarily taught at Mitford Medical School until dedicated professors joined.

  • Classes were held in the hospital wards before dedicated academic buildings were constructed.

Growth & Expansion (1950s–2000s)

Dhaka Medical College Hospital expanded rapidly as demand for modern healthcare increased.

Major Developments

  • 1955: Construction of new academic blocks, including lecture galleries and dissection halls.

  • 1952–1975: Establishment of multiple student hostels and dormitories for both male and female students, along with dedicated accommodations for intern doctors.

  • Infrastructure gradually expanded to include laboratories, modern operating theaters, specialized diagnostic units, and extended inpatient wards.

Over the decades, new clinical departments, specialized units, and postgraduate programs were added, positioning DMCH at the forefront of medical training and advanced treatment in Bangladesh.

Modernization & Hospital Expansion

Dhaka Medical College Hospital today is one of the largest tertiary-care hospitals in the country.

Current Profile

  • Capacity: Approximately 2,600 beds

  • Daily Patient Load:

    • Over 5,000 outpatient visits

    • Around 1,300 emergency patients

    • More than 500 inpatient admissions

  • Departments: Nearly every major clinical specialty, including Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Oncology, Neurology, Psychiatry, and more.

  • Burn & Plastic Surgery Unit: The hospital houses a 300-bed burn and plastic surgery unit, one of the largest such facilities in Bangladesh.

  • Surgical Operations: Tens of thousands of major and minor surgeries are performed annually.

A major milestone was the inauguration of DMCH-2, a modern hospital extension, which significantly expanded bed capacity and improved service delivery.
